FREEVIEW : Why do I have interference?

There are four main causes of interference.

Poor Aerial Connection can cause break up of picture and sound if there is damage or corrosion to your aerial lead, internally and externally, up to your roof aerial. Upgrading to a higher specification coaxial cable can help reduce these issues.

Induction Interference is caused by mains powered domestic appliances and devices that contain motors such as:

  • Washing machine;
  • Tumble dryer;
  • Central heating pump or combination boiler;
  • Fridge;
  • Freezer
  • Power tools (drills, jigsaws etc)
  • Vacuum cleaners;
  • Water pumps;
  • Automatic doors

You can identify if one or more of these devices is causing the interference by powering off the devices one by one to eliminate them.

These problems can usually be addressed by using a mains filter device with your Freeview box's mains plug.

Mobile Phone Interference

Mobile phones and other transmitters such as baby monitors, DECT phones, video senders and walkie talkies can cause interference. The solution is to keep them as away from your Freeview box and TV as possible.

4G Services

The recent introduction of 4G services for mobile networks is very close in frequency to some TV channels. Close proximity to 4G telecom towers may affect your TV signal. Click HERE for an interactive map of possible affected areas

The good news is that there is a solution available for you. Visit at800.tv for further information. Follow their troubleshooting guide and they may need to send you a simple plug in filter for your aerial to stop these issues.
